The Marriage of Isaac and Rebekah

Isaac marriage in Bible

Introduction

The marriage of Isaac and Rebekah is one of the most beautiful love stories in the Bible, full of faith, prayer, and divine guidance. It is found in Genesis 24, the longest chapter in the Book of Genesis, showing its importance in God’s covenant plan. Isaac was the promised son of Abraham and Sarah, and through his marriage, the covenant blessings of God would continue.

Abraham’s Concern for Isaac’s Marriage

After Sarah’s death, Abraham, now very old, turned his attention to finding a wife for his son Isaac. He knew Isaac’s marriage was vital for the future of God’s covenant promises. Abraham did not want Isaac to marry a Canaanite woman because they worshiped idols and lived wicked lives. Instead, he desired a wife from his own relatives in Mesopotamia, who still had knowledge of the one true God.

The servant, entrusted with this sacred mission, gathered ten camels and set out for the city of Nahor in Mesopotamia, carrying valuable gifts. When he arrived near the city, he stopped by a well in the evening, the time when women came to draw water.

The Appearance of Rebekah

Before the servant had even finished praying, a young woman named Rebekah came to the well with her jar on her shoulder. The Bible describes her as very beautiful, a virgin, pure in character. She was also the granddaughter of Nahor, Abraham’s brother, which made her of the right family.

The servant, amazed that his prayer had been answered so quickly, gave her gifts of jewelry and asked about her family. Upon learning she was from Abraham’s relatives, he bowed and worshiped God, thanking Him for His faithful guidance.

Rebekah’s Family Welcomes the Servant

Rebekah ran home to tell her family what had happened. Her brother Laban hurried out to meet the servant, especially after seeing the gold nose ring and bracelets she had received.

He recounted Abraham’s wealth, God’s blessing, the oath, his prayer at the well, and how Rebekah fulfilled the exact sign he had prayed for. Laban and Bethuel, Rebekah’s father, recognized that this was from the Lord and could not refuse. They agreed to give Rebekah to Isaac as wife.

Rebekah’s Decision

The next morning, the servant wanted to leave immediately and return to his master with Rebekah. But her family asked for a delay of ten days. The servant, eager to complete his mission, requested they decide quickly. They called Rebekah to ask her choice.

The Journey to Meet Isaac

Rebekah set out with her nurse and maidservants, riding on camels with the servant back to Canaan. It was a long journey, but her faith carried her through. Meanwhile, Isaac was living in the Negev and had gone out into the field one evening to meditate and pray.

As Rebekah approached, she saw Isaac in the distance. She respectfully covered herself with a veil, a sign of modesty and honor, as she prepared to meet her future husband.
