The story of God sending Moses to Pharaoh is one of the most powerful and defining moments in the Old Testament. It reveals God’s compassion for His people, His authority over the rulers of the earth, and His ability to use humble and unlikely individuals to accomplish His divine purposes. This account, found primarily in the book of Exodus, shows us how God chose Moses as a leader to deliver the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and confront Pharaoh with God’s command: “Let My people go.”

The Background: Israel in Bondage

Generations before Moses, Jacob and his family had moved to Egypt during a famine under the protection of Joseph, who had risen to power. Over time, the Israelites multiplied and became a great people. However, a new Pharaoh arose who did not know Joseph. Fearing their numbers and potential power, Pharaoh enslaved the Israelites, forcing them into hard labor.

The Israelites cried out to God for deliverance, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He was preparing to raise a deliverer—Moses.

The Call of Moses

Moses was born during a time when Pharaoh ordered all Hebrew baby boys to be killed. By God’s providence, his mother placed him in a basket on the Nile River, where Pharaoh’s daughter found and adopted him. Moses grew up in the palace with an Egyptian education but remained tied to his Hebrew identity.

One day, Moses killed an Egyptian who was beating a Hebrew slave and fled into the desert of Midian, where he lived as a shepherd for forty years.

It was here, at Mount Horeb, that Moses encountered God in the burning bush. God revealed His holiness, declaring, “I AM WHO I AM,” and called Moses to return to Egypt to confront Pharaoh. Despite Moses’ hesitation and excuses—fear of rejection, lack of eloquence, and doubt—God assured him of His presence and gave him signs to perform. Aaron, his brother, would serve as his spokesman.

God’s Command: Confront Pharaoh

God’s mission for Moses was clear: go to Pharaoh, the most powerful ruler on earth, and demand that he release the Israelites. This was not merely a political act but a spiritual confrontation between the God of Israel and the false gods of Egypt.

Moses and Aaron approached Pharaoh with God’s message: “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, ‘Let My people go, that they may hold a feast to Me in the wilderness.’”

Pharaoh, proud and defiant, replied, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey His voice and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and I will not let Israel go.” His heart was hardened, setting the stage for God’s mighty displays of power.

Signs and Wonders: God Versus Pharaoh

To prove His authority, God performed miraculous signs through Moses:

  • Turning the staff into a serpent.
  • Turning the Nile into blood.
  • Bringing plagues upon Egypt.

Each plague struck at the pride of Egypt, humiliating their gods and showing the power of the LORD. The plagues grew in intensity: frogs, gnats, flies, livestock disease, boils, hail, locusts, darkness, and finally, the death of the firstborn.

The Passover and Deliverance

Before the last plague, God instituted the Passover. The Israelites were instructed to sacrifice a lamb and put its blood on their doorposts. The blood served as a sign, and the angel of death “passed over” those homes, sparing the firstborn within.

That night, Egypt was struck with great sorrow as every firstborn of Egypt died, from Pharaoh’s household to the lowest servant. Finally, Pharaoh relented and commanded Moses to take the people and leave.

Israel departed in haste, beginning their journey toward the Promised Land. God had triumphed over Pharaoh, proving that He alone is Lord.

  1.
  2. God’s power is greater than worldly rulers.
Pharaoh represented human pride and authority, but even he was powerless before the God of Israel.
  3. Moses faced fear and doubt, yet by obeying God, he became part of history’s greatest deliverance.
