Joseph’s Early Life
Joseph was the eleventh son of Jacob and the first son of Rachel, Jacob’s beloved wife. From an early age, Joseph was different. He was favored by his father, who gave him a richly ornamented coat, often called the “coat of many colors.”

Pharaoh’s Dreams
Two years later, Pharaoh himself had two disturbing dreams. In the first, seven fat cows were eaten by seven thin cows. In the second, seven healthy heads of grain were swallowed up by seven thin, scorched heads. None of Pharaoh’s wise men or magicians could explain the dreams.
It was then that the cupbearer remembered Joseph and told Pharaoh about him. Joseph was quickly summoned from the prison, cleaned up, and brought before Pharaoh.
Joseph Interprets Pharaoh’s Dreams
Pharaoh explained his dreams to Joseph. With humility, Joseph said, “I cannot do it, but God will give Pharaoh the answer he desires.”

Joseph interpreted the dreams as one message from God: Egypt would experience seven years of abundance, followed by seven years of severe famine. Joseph then gave Pharaoh wise counsel—to appoint a discerning man to oversee the land, collect surplus grain during the good years, and store it for the years of famine.

Pharaoh was deeply impressed. He recognized that Joseph was filled with the Spirit of God and wiser than anyone in Egypt. Without hesitation, Pharaoh elevated Joseph to the highest position of power under him.
Pharaoh gave Joseph his signet ring, fine robes, and a gold chain. He rode in Pharaoh’s second chariot, and people bowed before him, proclaiming, “Make way!” Joseph was only thirty years old when he became ruler of Egypt.
Joseph’s Wise Leadership
As the years of abundance came, Joseph oversaw the gathering and storing of grain in vast quantities. When the famine struck, it spread beyond Egypt into surrounding lands. Because of Joseph’s foresight, Egypt had food while other nations suffered. People from all over came to Egypt to buy grain.
This set the stage for a dramatic reunion with Joseph’s brothers, who traveled to Egypt in search of food—unaware that the powerful ruler they would face was their own brother.
Lessons from Joseph’s Story
- God’s Sovereignty in Trials – Joseph’s life shows that even betrayal, false accusations, and imprisonment can become part of God’s greater plan.
