Joseph & Pharaoh
Pharaoh, the ruler of Egypt, once had two troubling dreams that no one in his court could explain.
In the first dream, Pharaoh stood by the Nile River. Out of the river came seven healthy, fat cows that grazed among the reeds. After them came seven thin, sickly cows, so weak they looked starved. Shockingly, the thin cows devoured the healthy ones, yet they remained just as thin and ugly as before. Pharaoh awoke disturbed.

In the second dream, Pharaoh saw a stalk of grain. It grew seven full, plump heads of grain. After them sprouted seven thin, scorched heads, withered by the hot east wind. The thin heads swallowed up the healthy ones. Pharaoh woke again, deeply troubled.
Though he called for Egypt’s magicians and wise men, none could interpret his dreams. Then Pharaoh’s chief cupbearer remembered Joseph, who was still in prison. He told Pharaoh how Joseph had correctly interpreted his own dream two years earlier.
Joseph & Pharaoh
Joseph was quickly brought before Pharaoh. He explained that both dreams had the same meaning:
- The seven good cows and seven good heads of grain represented seven years of abundance in Egypt.
- The seven thin cows and seven thin heads meant seven years of famine would follow.
Joseph & Pharaoh
Joseph told Pharaoh that God had revealed His plan: seven plentiful years would be consumed by seven years of severe famine, so severe that the time of abundance would be forgotten.
Joseph advised Pharaoh to appoint a wise, discerning man to oversee the land, store grain during the good years, and prepare for the famine. Pharaoh recognized Joseph’s wisdom and appointed him second-in-command over all Egypt.
Through Joseph’s leadership, Egypt stored up food during the seven years of plenty. When famine came, Egypt had enough grain not only for itself but also for neighboring nations. This event set the stage for Joseph’s brothers coming to Egypt in search of food, leading to their family’s reunion.
✨ Lesson: Pharaoh’s dreams show how God can use even the most powerful rulers to carry out His plans. The story highlights Joseph’s rise from prison to power and reminds us of the importance of wisdom, preparation, and trust in God’s timing.
Joseph and Pharaoh
After being sold into slavery by his brothers, Joseph was brought to Egypt, where his wisdom and integrity led him to great favor. While imprisoned, Joseph interpreted the dreams of Pharaoh’s cupbearer and baker, and later, Pharaoh himself. Pharaoh had troubling dreams about seven fat cows and seven thin cows, as well as seven healthy heads of grain and seven scorched ones. None of Egypt’s wise men could explain them, but Joseph, guided by God, revealed their meaning.
Joseph explained that the dreams foretold seven years of abundance followed by seven years of severe famine. He advised Pharaoh to store surplus grain during the plentiful years to prepare for the coming scarcity. Impressed by Joseph’s insight and God-given wisdom, Pharaoh appointed him as second-in-command over all Egypt. Joseph was given authority to oversee the collection and distribution of food, ensuring Egypt’s survival during the famine.
When the famine spread across lands, people from other nations, including Joseph’s own family, came to Egypt to buy grain. Through these events, God’s plan unfolded—Joseph was not only reunited with his family but also became the instrument through which many lives were saved.
The story of Joseph and Pharaoh highlights faith, humility, and divine providence. It shows how God can turn hardship into purpose and elevate those who remain faithful and wise in spirit.
Joseph served under several pharaohs in Egypt, initially as a slave to Potiphar, an officer in the pharaoh’s guard, and later was appointed by a pharaoh as a high-ranking official after interpreting his dreams
