Noah Builds the Ark

The story of Noah building the Ark is one of the most well-known narratives from the Bible, found in the book of Genesis, chapters 6–9. It is a timeless story of faith, obedience, divine judgment, and salvation. Through Noah’s example, we learn about trust in God’s word, even when it seems impossible or unreasonable by human standards.

1. The World Before the Flood

The Bible describes the world during Noah’s time as deeply corrupt and filled with violence. Humanity had turned away from God, following wickedness and evil desires. Genesis 6:5 states: “The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.”

2. God Chooses Noah

Noah was not perfect, but he was faithful and obedient to God. Scripture says: “Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.” (Genesis 6:8). Unlike the rest of his generation, Noah walked with God.

3. Instructions for the Ark

God’s instructions were detailed and clear. Noah was told to build the Ark from gopher wood (a type of timber) and coat it inside and out with pitch for waterproofing. The Ark’s dimensions were extraordinary:

  • Length: 300 cubits (about 450 feet or 137 meters)
  • Width: 50 cubits (about 75 feet or 23 meters

4. Noah’s Obedience

Building the Ark was not an easy task. It required immense labor, resources, and time. Many scholars believe it could have taken decades. Throughout this period, Noah remained faithful, trusting God’s word even though no one had seen a flood of such magnitude before.

5. Gathering the Animals

As the Ark neared completion, God commanded Noah to bring pairs of animals—male and female—of every kind, into the Ark. Seven pairs of clean animals (suitable for sacrifice and food) and two of the unclean were to be taken. Birds, livestock, and creeping creatures were all included.

6. Entering the Ark noah builds the ark

When the Ark was ready, Noah, his wife, his three sons (Shem, Ham, and Japheth), and their wives entered it. This small group of eight people would survive the flood and become the ancestors of future generations.

7. The Flood Begins

Rain fell for 40 days and 40 nights. The waters rose, covering the mountains and destroying all living things outside the Ark. The floodwaters prevailed on the earth for 150 days.

8. After the Flood

Eventually, the waters receded, and the Ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. Noah released a raven and then a dove to test if the land had dried. When the dove returned with an olive leaf, Noah knew the earth was becoming habitable again.

9. Noah’s Worship and God’s noah builds the ark Covenant

The first thing Noah did upon leaving the Ark was build an altar to the Lord and offer sacrifices. His act of worship showed gratitude for God’s protection and faithfulness.
